ST. JAMES GOES GREEN!!!

With grocery prices skyrocketing, why not plant a garden this summer. Even if it's just a couple tomatoes or peppers. I've got 3 plants, which should keep me supplied throughout the summer. Every little bit helps and we're hoping to have a "Pantry" for the Fall Festival so any surplus can be canned later this summer. Also, try to buy local and shop at the Farmers' Market or at stands along the roadside. Saturday mornings from 9-12 there is a Farmers' Market at the train station/Visitors Bureau on Magnolia Street which I'm anxious to visit.

Now is a good time to start a compost pile. You can either buy one like I have in the corner of my yard or make your own. I drive my husband absolutely crazy by opening my kitchen door and "tossing" eggs shells, spoiled fruit, vegetable peelings, etc. onto my flower garden and then periodically turn it over. Make sure you don't "toss" anything to do with meat or you'll have furry rodents for dinner. Anything else is fine. Even the cobs from my corn are in the pile. Be sure to add grass clippings along with the rest.

I've also purchased a rain barrel (for when we do get that precious commodity) which I've positioned under one of my downspouts to catch rain to water my pots of flowers and beds. I'd love to have one at the bottom of each spout but that would be overfill for my husband so we've compromised. I love not turning on the hose. The barrel has a screen on top to filter leaves and sticks but it's been empty for quite a while. This too shall pass!!!

Have a great summer,
